Nuveen Readies Two Interval Funds Blending Public and Private Credit
The two funds share a portfolio management team and fee structure, but one must keep at least 80% of managed assets in below-investment-grade credit while the other caps that exposure at 50%.
October 14, 2026

Nuveen is preparing to launch two new interval funds that combine public bond markets with private credit. The continuously offered funds share a management team, share classes and liquidity terms, but they take very different amounts of below-investment-grade risk.
Registration statements filed October 13 cover Nuveen Enhanced Credit Income Fund and Nuveen Enhanced Strategic Income Fund. Both are diversified, closed-end funds operated as interval funds, and both seek a high level of current income. As new registrants, the funds have left several key terms blank, including management fee rates, total expense ratios and the share of outstanding stock each expects to buy back in its quarterly repurchase offers.
Where the Two Funds Diverge
Credit quality is the clearest dividing line. Under normal circumstances, Nuveen Enhanced Credit Income Fund will invest at least 80% of its managed assets in below-investment-grade instruments, or in unrated instruments its portfolio managers judge to be of comparable quality. Nuveen Enhanced Strategic Income Fund caps that exposure at 50% of managed assets.
The core mandates are worded differently as well. The credit fund commits at least 80% of its assets to credit and credit-related instruments of any type, while the strategic income fund commits at least 80% of its managed assets to income-producing investments of any type. Only the strategic income fund's prospectus states that it may gain exposure through other registered open-end and closed-end funds, including business development companies.
Otherwise, the investment menus are nearly identical. Each fund may invest in:
- U.S. government securities and debt of foreign governments
- Residential and commercial mortgage-backed securities and asset-backed securities
- Domestic and foreign corporate debt, preferred securities, contingent capital securities and convertibles
- Fixed and floating rate loans
- Municipal securities
Each may also hold up to 30% of managed assets in instruments denominated in currencies other than the U.S. dollar.
Public and Private Credit in One Wrapper
Both funds will hold public and private credit, and the private side may include directly originated instruments. The prospectuses describe private credit as unregistered debt from privately negotiated transactions, privately issued structured products and securitizations, and privately originated commercial real estate loans. Loan holdings may range from senior secured to unsecured and subordinated debt.
The funds may co-invest alongside other Nuveen-affiliated funds and accounts under an exemptive order, including in directly originated credit.
Neither fund sets a minimum rating requirement or a limit on average maturity or duration. The portfolio managers will work from the top down, starting with their general economic outlook, then selecting credit sectors, then choosing individual securities within those sectors. The funds are not required to hold every sector at all times.
Both funds may use leverage to the extent the Investment Company Act of 1940 permits, and may use derivatives for hedging, duration management or to enhance returns.
The Portfolio Management Team
Nuveen Fund Advisors serves as investment adviser to both funds and has appointed Nuveen Asset Management as the sub-adviser responsible for investing their managed assets. Nuveen Alternatives Advisors is also identified as a sub-adviser. Nuveen Fund Advisors is an indirect subsidiary of Nuveen, the investment management arm of TIAA. As of March 31, 2026, Nuveen managed approximately $1.4 trillion, including approximately $157.2 billion managed by Nuveen Fund Advisors.
The same four portfolio managers are named for both funds:
- Mark Zheng, a multi-sector portfolio manager who joined the firm in 2010, is lead manager of a diversified total return component portfolio for the CREF Real Estate Account and co-manages the Stable Value Account.
- Anders Persson, head of Fixed Income Research, also manages the firm's leveraged loan portfolios. He joined TIAA Investments in 2005 and Nuveen Asset Management in 2018.
- Nicholas Travaglino is lead portfolio manager on Nuveen's Strategic Income multisector strategy and leads the securitized sector team, which selects residential and commercial mortgage-backed and asset-backed securities for all portfolios. He joined the firm in 2014.
- Ji Shin, a managing director on the private fixed income team at Nuveen Alternatives Advisors, manages that portfolio and leads its workout efforts. He joined the firm in 2009.
The roster brings together public multi-sector, leveraged loan, securitized and private fixed income specialists, in line with a mandate that spans public and private markets.
Share Classes and Costs
Each fund will offer three share classes through Nuveen Securities on a best-efforts basis:
- Class I: $100,000 minimum initial investment, limited to certain eligible investors, with no sales load imposed by the fund or its distributor.
- Class A1: $2,500 minimum, a maximum sales load of 2.50% of the offering price, and distribution and service fees of up to 0.75% a year.
- Class A2: $2,500 minimum, no sales load, and distribution and service fees of up to 0.50% a year.
Class A1 and Class A2 shares will initially be offered at $20.00 per share, plus any applicable sales load, and then continuously at net asset value.
The management fee will be calculated on average daily managed assets, which include assets financed with most types of leverage. It combines a fund-level component with a complex-level component tied to total eligible assets across Nuveen funds. The specific rates, along with any expense limitation, have not yet been filled in.
Liquidity and Distributions
Each fund has adopted a fundamental policy to offer to repurchase between 5% and 25% of its outstanding shares each quarter at net asset value. The first repurchase request deadline is expected no later than six months after the registration statement first becomes effective.
The funds do not currently expect to charge a repurchase fee but may charge up to 2.00% of proceeds to offset repurchase costs. Payment is expected one to three business days after the pricing date, and no later than seven calendar days.
Both funds intend to declare distributions daily and pay them monthly. The prospectuses caution that the shares will not be listed, that no trading market is expected to develop and that investors should treat the shares as illiquid. Nuveen Fund Advisors or an affiliate has provided, or expects to provide, the initial seed investment in each fund before operations begin.
The two funds would join an existing Nuveen interval fund lineup that includes Nuveen Enhanced CLO Income Fund, which added Stephen Virgilio as a portfolio manager in September.
